Green Island Resort awarded for Best Environmental Practice

Green Island ResortWe’re pleased to announce Green Island Resort has been awarded for “Best Environmental Practice” at the annual Queensland Hotels Association Awards for Excellence announced on the Gold Coast.
At this major event for the Hotel and Hospitality industry, the eco-sensitive Green Island Resort was acknowledged for its commitment to environmental practices including energy efficiency, water, recycling and waste management.

Lisa Krause, Green Island Resort General Manager said it was an outstanding achievement and reflected the dedication of the island’s staff.

“We face many special challenges being located offshore, and especially operating within a World Heritage Area. It is vital to our future and the health of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to ensure environmentally sustainable practices.”

“Our practices are aimed at preservation and conservation of the island’s ecosystem while providing an enjoyable and safe environment for guests and staff alike.

Through energy efficient systems, continual improvement to the island’s tertiary sewage treatment plant has reduced its carbon footprint in excess of 8 tonnes CO2-equiv in the past year.

All waste and recyclable materials are returned to the mainland for appropriate disposal or recycling. A desalination plant operates on the island, while the tertiary sewage treatment plant enables treated effluent to be used for irrigation, fire reserves and for flushing toilets.

Green Island is the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef with a rainforest and is home to over 120 native plant species. With Advanced Ecotourism Certification and a 5 Star rating, the resort offers luxury accommodation with just 46 suites.

Green Island Resort will now represent Queensland in the national Australian Hotels Association Awards for Excellence.
