Green Island’s beautiful beaches have again been recognised as amongst the best in the Far North with two awards in the annual Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Challenge – “Cleanest Beach” and the “Resource Recovery Award”.

Just 27 km offshore from Cairns, Green Island is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike from around the world to enjoy beach activities, rainforest boardwalks and local community events throughout the year.

“These awards are an outstanding achievement and recognise the commitment of the Island’s staff and stakeholders who not only ensure Green Island’s pristine beaches are clean and inviting, but also set the standard with conservation practices,” said Tony Baker, Quicksilver Group Managing Director.

To take out the title of Cleanest Beach, a beach community must not only be clean, but be strongly proactive and exemplify all aspects of the Clean Beach Challenge including environmental protection, litter prevention, resource management, youth initiatives, visitor friendliness, community partnerships and action.

“This is a year-round collaborative effort by the staff of Green Island Resort, Great Adventures and the Quicksilver Group, and Queensland Parks and Wildlife. Given the importance of protecting our World Heritage Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, this is a wonderful accolade for all involved.”

The Resource Recovery Award recognises outstanding accomplishment in resource management, highlighted by Green Island Resort’s extensive recycling program, energy and water minimisation and conservation practices. As a point of interest, over 16.8 tonnes of glass and plastic bottles were recycled by the resort last year.

Green Island will now represent the region in the State Clean Beach Challenge Awards to be announced in December.
