Local swimmers shine at Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim

29 September 2008: Local Cairns swimmers took out all winning places in the annual Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim on Sunday 28 September, as competitors took on the 1.5km and 3km swims in this unique Great Barrier Reef event.

And it was back-to-back wins for 14 yo Josh Bairstow and 15 yo Clinton Cave, taking out the 3km and 1.5km swims respectively for two years running. Clinton set a new course record of 21 minutes 30 seconds for the 1.5km swim. Rani Parmenter took out the women’s 3km swim while Sarah Candier won the 1.5km swim.

Now in its third year, the event attracted swimmers aged from 12 years to 78 year old veteran Cairns swimmer, Thelma Bryan, and included a strong contingent of competitors from Townsville, and Brisbane.

Many of the competitors were amazed by the spectacular course, spotting turtles, rays and small reef tip sharks along the way.

Taking place on the leeward side of the island, each leg of the event offers a variety of conditions, from shallows to wind chop to tidal flow.

The event also included a fun swim of 200 metres for junior swimmers under the age of 12.

The Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim is a community event and supported by Cairns Crocs and Surf Life Saving Queensland, with prize sponsorship from Powerade, Tusa and View.
