Record Numbers Compete in the Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim
In slightly choppy conditions the 5th annual Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim attracted a record number of swimmers in the 1.5km and 3km swim on Sunday 26th September as 119 competitors swam in this unique Great Barrier Reef event.
With swimmers from as far afield as Melbourne, Brisbane and a strong contingent from Townsville, it was the young swimmers from Cairns that took out first place in all divisions.
Michael Healy, Quicksilver Group Director of Sales and Marketing said “ The event is now its fifth year, and goes from strength to strength. It is a wonderful community event that attracted 119 swimmers aged from 12- 80 years, including veteran Cairns swimmer, Thelma Bryan who successfully completed the 3km swim.”
For the second year running 15yo Jack Gerrard won the 3 km swim course with a time of 39.00 minutes. The Women’s 3km was won by Nerice Smith also 15yo in a time of 45.30.
The 1.5 km swim was hotly contested and Max Fifield (13yo ) took out first place in the men’s and Tessa Jackson ( 15yo ) the women’s.
Many competitors were awestruck on finishing the spectacular course, spotting an array of marine life including turtles, rays and small reef tip sharks along the way.
