Low Isles treat for local schools

Grade 7 at Low Isles

Each year, Quicksilver is delighted to host hundreds of local school children with free visits to experience the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef on Low Isles. Quicksilver offers all Grade 7 classes in the Port Douglas region free educational visits to Low Isles travelling aboard 'Wavedancer' to promote conservation issues.

We love to receive their many letters of thanks and often quite humorous perspectives on their excursions; getting a giggle out of wearing lycra suits and finding out who has good sea legs! Our team of marine biologists are also actively involved in school environmental programs and proud to support the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority "Reef Guardians" program.

Quicksilver Group Annual Christmas Appeal

Quicksilver Group Christmas Appeal

Now in its 8th year, the Quicksilver Group is delighted to be again co-ordinating our annual Christmas Charity Appeal, providing much needed food items and gifts to help make the festive season a little brighter for many people in need in our community.

Our local charities of St Vincents de Paul, Lifeline, The Salvation Army and the Douglas Community have reported a greater need than ever this year. Through the generous support and donations of our tourism industry colleagues, local tour desks and suppliers, the Quicksilver Group co-ordinates the appeal and also donates extra funds to buy gifts and food items.

Sincere thanks to all who have contributed to make this year's appeal once again a success.

BIO BITS

Parrotfish

parrot fish

There are over 30 species of parrotfish on the Great Barrier Reef and you are usually guaranteed to see these magnificently coloured creatures swimming over the corals. They all share a few common traits, the most obvious being their teeth. Parrotfish evolved from the carnivorous wrasse family, but through the course of time, their teeth have moved forward on the jawbone and reduced in size. Eventually, the teeth fused together creating a very useful tool for scratching algae off the surface of the coral.

When parrotfish sleep at night, they often secrete a mucus “sleeping bag” around themselves for protection from predators. The bags also have antibiotic properties that are beneficial for the fish.

Filmed at Norman Reef recently, check out this video clip of a parrotfish tucked away for the night while the coral spawns. Vision courtesy of Satoshi Kagimoto, Indepth Video.

POSTCARDS

Postcard.... to Quicksilver

Great AdventuresI recently went on my second Quicksilver cruise to Agincourt Reef, my first was 6 years ago departing from Cairns.  The first tour was absolutely spectacular as an American boy who has never seen such wonder!  I simply had to book another Quicksilver tour when I visited Queensland again.  Now, I have moved to Oz and had the opportunity to tour with you again.  The second time didn't disappoint!  Absolutely fantastic; it was even better!  You run such a tight ship and the organization is seamless!  The crew are always professional yet not too stuffy to have personality.  This trip was so amazing that I have convinced a co-worker to travel with you guys; I am confident he will be just as awe struck.

In these times, when praise for a job well done or compliments are few and far between, I feel you should know how some of your very satisfied customers feel!
