'GREEN ISLAND OCEAN SWIM 2007'

Green Island Ocean Swim

New course records set at Green Island Ocean Swim
The annual Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim held in October was a great success with new course records set. Seventy five swimmers took on the challenge of the 1.5km and 3km swims in this unique Great Barrier Reef event.

With many of the competitors having competed in ocean swims around Australia and the world, they were amazed by the spectacular course, spotting turtles, rays and small reef tip sharks along the way.

Local swimmers, 14 yo Clinton Cave and 13 yo Josh Bairstow took out the 1.5km and 3km swims respectively in new course record times in challenging conditions. Townsville’s Penny Palfrey made back-to-back wins in the women’s 3km swim while Rani Parmenter took out the women’s 1.5km swim.

In its second year, the event attracted 75 swimmers aged from 12 years to 77 year old veteran Cairns swimmer, Thelma Bryan. Taking place on the leeward side of the island, each leg of the swim offers a variety of conditions, from shallows to wind chop to tidal flow. The event also includes a fun swim of 200 metres for junior swimmers under the age of 12.
