Quicksilver VIII Powering On
Quicksilver’s flagship wavepiercing catamaran, Quicksilver VIII or Quicky 8 as she is affectionately known, is currently undergoing a $3million, four engine refit.
Quicksilver’s 45 metre vessel is being fitted with four MTU 2000 series diesel engines, providing a phenomenal 40% weight reduction from the previous engines with a state-of-the-art turbo-charging and fuel injection system to produce enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
With the old engines removed, the first of the new 4-ton engines will be lifted into the side of the Wavepiercer on Tuesday. Peter Price, Group Engineering Manager said “ It is close to a month since we started work so it will be a great day to see the first engine being put in place. We have been working with a naval architect as the new engines have also required new electronics, pipe work, exhaust system and even changes in the wheelhouse.”

Tony Baker, Managing Director of the Quicksilver Group said “ With the significant advances in these fuel efficient and environmentally enhanced engines we know we will continue to deliver the “ best practice” that we strive for as a company. The new engines will also allow us to reduce our carbon emission by about 20%, which reinforces our commitment to the environment we work in and is evident in our Company’s Advanced Eco Tourism Accreditation.
Following the refit, Quicksilver VIII will be back at work on her Agincourt Reef outer reef cruise in July.
