TAKING THE PLUNGE ... I DO !
June 22nd 2006:

Marriage proposal on the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns, Australia -- Where does a devoted diver propose to his swimming sweetheart?  Ten metres underwater of course!  This is exactly what happened when Paul Willems, originally from Perth, organised a special proposal in the tropical waters off the Great Barrier Reef.

With the assistance of the Silverswift crew, Willems set up the perfect opportunity to surprise his girlfriend, Andrea, with a diver’s ultimate piece of treasure.  A pre-made tile and ring was “buried”... Read Full Story

rare antartic bird

"RARE ANTARTIC BIRD MAKES AGINCOURT HOME" ... June 2006:
It must be cold down south because a Northern Giant Petrel bird made his home on the Quicksilver platform at Agincourt Reef last week.  Listed as a vulnerable species and rarely venturing above the 28-degree latitude, this young male seems to have a bit of adventure in his blood or just needed a warm holiday. “This bird, a Northern Giant-petrel Macronectes halli, appears to have been caught up in the recent strong tradewinds, lost his way and decided to stop  ... On 11 February, Tasmanian adventurer Anthony Mann set out to cycle Australia whilst promoting his passion for sustainable transport.  His goal to reach the furthest points North, East, South and West, along with the highest and lowest points of Australia would not have been complete without a trip to the Great Barrier Reef.“It was quite a unique experience,” says this intrepid bi-pedaling traveller.  “Quicksilver very generously sent me 30 miles out to sea with my bike ... POSTCARD:  from Therese D:
"Dear Sam and the Crew,  I thought I would let you know that the day out on the reef on Sunday was fantastic (Silverswift). I had never gone out to the reef from Cairns before always going from Port.

All sites were all brilliant, I really loved the freedom of snorkeling areas, the staff were fantastic and really made the day by being so attentive and friendly, nothing seemed to be too hard, the food great, (sorry but I ate two slices of the chocolate cake) and the weather was amazing, probably being one of the best days I have ever gone out to the reef.  Kind regards Therese D, Oct2005"

marine turtles TURTLES ... (Bio Bit #12)
How many types are there?

The Great Barrier Reef is home to six of the world’s seven marine turtles, such as the common Green, the small omnivorous Hawksbill, and the increasingly rare Loggerhead. Different turtles have different diets.

What do they eat?
Green turtles are predominantly herbivores, feeding on algae and some seagrass species, Loggerheads are essentially carnivores, consuming molluscs and crustaceans, whilst the rare giant leatherback feeds exclusively on jellyfish.
