New course record set at Green Island Ocean Swim

Green Island Ocean Swim In challenging conditions, 106 avid ocean swimmers took to the water to compete in Great Adventures annual Green Island Ocean Swim on Sunday 4th September.

With entrants from Cairns, Townsville, the Gold Coast and even Italy, competitors were challenged with 20 knot winds in the 1.5km and 3km distances in this unique Great Barrier Reef event.

Setting a new course record for the Women's 1.5km swim, 16 year old Meaghan Hill-Murray of Cairns shaved almost one minute off the previous course record completing the distance in 20 minutes 23 seconds.

In the Men's 1.5km distance, Cairns swimmer Nicolas Arenas took out first place while in the 3km distance, Townsville swimmers Kylee DeRooy and Matthew Pegg took out the Women's and Men's first places respectively.

Michael Healy, Quicksilver Group Director of Sales and Marketing said, "The event is now in its sixth year, and as well as being a wonderful community event, has become a regular fixture on the Ocean Swim calendar."

Green Island's Ocean Swim attracted competitors aged from 12-81 years, including veteran Cairns swimmer, Thelma Bryan who successfully completed the 1.5km swim. The event also included a fun swim for enthusiastic junior swimmers under the age of 12.

The Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim is supported by Powerade and View Tabata, Surf Live Saving Queensland and the Cairns Crocs Triathalon.
