Migaloo Sightings

When it comes to spotting that most famous white humpback whale, Migaloo, Quicksilver was again the first to sight him in the Cairns and Port Douglas region, much to the delight of passengers and crew.

The first sighting of Migaloo in our region was on 21 July when Quicksilver VIII passengers and crew sighted him playing off Port Douglas, 3 nautical miles north of Snapper Island at 10.37am. He was travelling with a pod of dolphins.

Pictured, the luminescent figure of Migaloo was spotted off Green Island by chance during some aerial filming with Great Barrier Reef Helicopters, image courtesy of photographer Marc McCormack.

The Quicksilver Group has an enviable record of being fortunate to have seen Migaloo in recent years and has been able to assist with valuable information in tracking his travels.

  • 13 & 14 August 2009: A double treat for passengers aboard both Quicksilver’s Outer Reef cruise and Silversonic who spotted Migaloo half way between Tongue Reef and Low Isles (about 4 miles NE of Low Isles). The following day, Great Adventures passengers were delighted to see Migaloo off Green Island, southward bound.
  • 2008: There were no confirmed sightings of Migaloo in the Cairns and Port Douglas region.
  • 24 July 2007: Silversonic was the first to sight Migaloo, at that time swimming with two other humpbacks and travelling north off Undine Cay.
  • 15 July 2006: Great Adventures first sighted Migaloo off Green Island.
  • 16 July 2005: Quicksilver first sighted Migaloo off Low Isles.
